2026 Emmy Awards, 'SPIDER-NOIR' gets cancelled, Lindsay Clancy's mistrial

Creative Arts Emmys wrap with major wins for ‘Widow’s Bay,’ ‘DTF St. Louis’ and ‘Spider-Noir’

The Emmy race gained several new storylines this weekend as the Creative Arts ceremonies handed out more than 100 awards ahead of the main Primetime ceremony later this month.

Among the weekend’s standout productions was Apple TV+’s “Widow’s Bay,” which dominated Sunday’s presentation with eight victories spanning acting and technical categories. “DTF St. Louis” also had a strong showing, with David Harbour and Linda Cardellini taking home supporting acting awards, while creator Steven Conrad won for both writing and directing.

Prime Video’s canceled “Spider-Noir” proved that an ending television series does not necessarily mean an awards-season defeat, collecting five trophies for areas including visual effects, cinematography and stunt coordination. “South Park” meanwhile returned to the top of the animation field, securing its fifth Emmy and its first win in the category since 2013.

The weekend also marked career milestones for several performers. Shailene Woodley earned her first Emmy for “Paradise,” while Ernest Harden Jr. was honored for his guest performance on “The Pitt.” Netflix’s “Remarkably Bright Creatures” claimed the television movie prize.

Other winners included “Palm Royale,” “The Traitors,” “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” and “The Muppet Show,” with the remaining Primetime awards scheduled for September 14.

‘SPIDER-NOIR’ cancelled after 1 season

Spider-Noir has reached the end of its road at Amazon, but the cancellation does not spell the end of the studio’s television partnership with Sony. Although the Nicolas Cage-led series will not return for another season, the companies are continuing to develop several projects under their existing collaboration, with at least one reportedly approaching a series order.

The decision comes despite Spider-Noir making a strong impression with critics and awards voters. The series holds a 92% critics score and 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and collected 11 Emmy nominations, giving it more nominations than any other Prime Video series this year.

Cage’s television debut and the popularity of the Spider-Man universe also helped attract viewers. The series opened with 851 million minutes watched in the U.S., placing second on Nielsen’s original streaming series chart during its first week. Across its first six weeks, it accumulated 2.6 billion viewing minutes.

However, its audience declined relatively quickly compared with other Prime Video successes, while the series’ expensive production likely made renewal harder to justify. The show required both color and black-and-white versions, increasing its production costs.

Set in 1930s New York, Spider-Noir follows Cage’s Ben Reilly, a troubled private investigator who becomes the city’s lone superhero after a personal tragedy. Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Jack Huston and Brendan Gleeson also starred.

Judge ruled mistrial in Lindsay Clancy case

The murder trial of Lindsay Clancy has ended without a verdict after jurors failed to reach a unanimous decision over whether the Massachusetts mother was criminally responsible for the deaths of her three children.

Superior Court Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial Friday following days of deliberations. The jury had informed the court multiple times that it remained deadlocked, even after receiving additional instructions urging members to reconsider their positions.

Clancy faced three first-degree murder charges following the 2023 deaths. While she does not deny killing her children, her defense argued that she was experiencing postpartum psychosis at the time and therefore should not be held criminally responsible. Prosecutors, however, maintained that the killings were deliberate and intentional.

The mistrial does not constitute an acquittal, meaning the case can still continue. Prosecutors may seek a new trial, pursue a plea agreement or ultimately dismiss the charges.

For now, Clancy remains at a mental health facility while both sides determine their next steps. Legal expert Heather Cucolo said a retrial is a likely possibility given the seriousness and public profile of the case.

“A case like this that obviously has been so high-profile and there is so much of an emotional response to this to the facts of this case, I think it's very likely that the prosecutor will ask for a retrial,” Cucolo said.

If prosecutors proceed, Clancy would face a new jury and another trial, potentially after months of legal preparations.

Lea Salonga earns star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Lea Salonga has reached another historic milestone, becoming the first Filipina to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The Tony Award-winning actress and singer marked the occasion by celebrating not only her career but also the people whose support helped make her journey possible.

The star was unveiled on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles on September 4, nearly five decades after Salonga began performing as a child in Manila. Reflecting on the achievement, she acknowledged that the honor represented more than her individual accomplishments.

“There’s something funny about a star like this because there’s only room for one name: mine. But no career is ever the work of just one person,” Salonga said.

She highlighted her mother, Ligaya, who supported her early career and even produced and personally helped sell her first album. Salonga also thanked her brother Gerard, son Nic Chien, mentors, collaborators, colleagues, and audiences who supported her throughout the years.

With internationally acclaimed roles in Miss Saigon and Les Misérables, along with voicing the singing parts of Disney’s Jasmine and Mulan, Salonga hopes her milestone encourages aspiring Filipino performers.

“I hope that someday, a young Filipino kid comes to Hollywood, sees my name, and thinks, ‘Oh, maybe I can get here too.’”
