Best New Track: “Waco, Texas” by Ethel Cain

The curtain falls on Ethel Cain today.
The singer has finally released the follow-up to Preacher’s Daughter, which, in a twist, is actually a prequel to the story. Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You finds young Ethel Cain at the heart of tragedy again. Squarely in its center, really. We can assume it’s going to end the way it always does.
The standout track here, and our favorite release this week, goes to “Waco, Texas” a sprawling 15-minute epic which closes the album in a big blaze of grandeuer. In a way, it’s the turning point of the record. Just as the illusion settles, the dream dims and reality bangs on the screen door. Life demands to be felt.
“I’ve been picking names for our children / you’ve been wondering how you’re gonna feed them,” she sings. “Love is not enough in this world.”
We can only see one thing for sure: No happy ending awaits Ethel Cain.
