Best New Track: The Subway by Chappell Roan

Can you hear that? Echoing from the rooftops all the way down by the rail station below — she got away!!!!
Fans have eagerly awaited a studio version of “The Subway” for over a year after Chappell Roan first unveiled the song live at the Governors Ball in June 2024. Just recently, posters appeared across New York City teasing the release with slogan “Going through a breakup? Get bangs!” and a “Best before August 1” bread tag hinting at the release date. It’s a clever wink at the cover art of Roan adrift in a sea of wigs.
Fresh off her Grammy win for Best New Artist, Roan might seem like she’s just getting started, but she’s already moving like a main-stage star. “The Subway” captures heartbreak in the kind of gut-punch honesty we’ve come to expect from Taylor Swift while carrying a similar undercut to Olivia Rodrigo’s “drivers license.” That familiar mix-up when you think an old flame’s a couple seats down from you.
The outro is a playful twist of words turning “she’s got a way” into “she got away.” The longing, charm and allusion are all packed into four minutes. And that’s available right now.
