Stray Kids and Jennie Make History as First K-Pop Headliners at Governors Ball
The 16th edition of Governors Ball Music Festival opened this weekend at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, New York, with a lineup that placed K-pop at the center of the festival. Stray Kids took the stage Saturday, while Jennie is scheduled to headline Sunday, together marking the first time K-pop acts have topped the Governors Ball lineup.
Stray Kids took the stage on Saturday with a high-energy set built around their stadium-tested catalog, delivering the kind of large-scale production that has fueled their rise across North America. Jennie is set to close Sunday’s programming with a solo performance expected to highlight her growing presence as a standalone global pop act beyond BLACKPINK, further underscoring her expanding festival footprint in the United States.
While Jennie and Stray Kids are the first K-Pop act headlining Gov Ball, they are not the first one to perform at the festival. In 2023, aespa became the first K-pop group to perform at the festival, followed by P1Harmony in 2024 as the first boy group to appear. In 2025, wave to earth added to the genre’s steady presence on the bill, paving the way for Stray Kids and Jennie to take top billing in 2026.
Mark Lee Launches Independent Label Upper Room After SM Entertainment Exit
Mark Lee has launched his own independent label, Upper Room, marking a new chapter in his career just two months after leaving SM Entertainment.
The Canadian rapper and singer announced the company on June 4, saying the venture will serve as the home for his future music and creative projects. Mark Lee will lead the agency as co-CEO while continuing his work as a solo artist.
The move follows his departure from SM Entertainment, where he spent roughly a decade as an artist. His exit closed a 10-year run with the company and NCT-related activities and set the stage for his first major business venture outside the label system.
In a statement shared through Upper Room’s official channels, Lee described the name as “this prepared place” that carries “a quiet readiness” and represents “a moment suspended just before everything begins.”
Upper Room said the label will anchor Mark Lee's creative direction and future projects. The name also draws on biblical imagery, referencing the room of the Last Supper in the Gospel of Mark, and appears to reflect themes Lee has previously associated with his faith. Fans have since humorously speculated online about possible genre shifts (from K-Pop to Christian Pop) in his future work, though no changes have been announced.

BTS' V Responds to Viral Boot Camp Videos, Defends Former Military Colleague

Screenshot of BTS V’s (also known as Taehyung) comment
BTS member V drew attention from fans this week after unexpectedly responding to social media videos that recounted his experiences during mandatory military service, sparking discussion over privacy, friendship and life inside boot camp.
The videos, posted by a creator believed to have trained alongside V, shared personal stories from their time together, including holiday church visits, games played at camp and V's role as a recruit platoon leader. V surprised viewers by joining the conversation directly.
"Long time no see. Whoa, you remember everything so clearly," he wrote.
The interaction quickly gained traction online, with some fans welcoming the glimpse into V's military life while others questioned whether such memories should be shared publicly. V later addressed the debate, saying he found the videos enjoyable and urging the creator not to be discouraged by criticism.
"In life, there are times when something done with good intentions can be taken differently," he wrote, adding that his former colleague had been "the ace of our platoon."

Favorite New Music This Week
SHINee return with "ATMOS" this week reminded listeners once again why the group remains one of K-pop’s most reliable acts nearly two decades into their career. While trends have shifted around them, SHINee lean into their identity: polished pop, strong vocals, and a clear sense of musical direction.
The title track, "Atmos", sets the tone with glitchy synth-house energy that feels both sleek and slightly unstable. Its chorus is sharp and memorable, driven by bold vocal delivery that cuts through the dense production. "HOURS" follows with bright funk-pop styling, while "Possibility" leans into uplifting territory, blending modern electronic textures with a standout chorus that elevates an otherwise uneven verse section.
"Anti Believer" darkens the mood with a moody dance beat and a more introspective edge, while still staying accessible through its addictive hook. The second half softens with "Still Raining," a soft mid-tempo track, followed by "Thousand Miles Away," a traditional ballad that closes the record on an emotional note, even if it never fully builds to a peak.
Overall, "ATMOS" is steady, well-crafted, and unmistakably SHINee at its core.
